INVITED LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS SINCE TENURE REVIEW, 2011-2016

CALLIGRAPHY LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS

Invited Lectures and Workshops related to Calligraphy or Lettering
are indicated in the listing with the word Calligraphy. These workshops are customized and designed to meet the needs and requests of the specific organization or group. I have conducted workshops with individuals representing many different backgrounds, ages, interests, and skill levels.

Chancery Cursive is the hand most requested, and easy to recommend, because it is a familiar style, it is popular, and it can be demonstrated
and practiced in a short timeframe. I have taught workshops with as few
as 5 people and as many as 25 people. I would say that 14 is the ideal number, so that I can provide individual help, and there is a feeling
of united purpose and community in the room.

Generally, the workshops are 3 hours in length and begin with a historical overview and introduction to the letter families. This provides participants with a fundamental understanding of the systematic design of alphabets. Using a large Copic marker on white paper on a wall surface, I demonstrate the related letter families (such as n, h, r, m, and u) by drawing the letters in the proper stroke sequence and proportion. Students follow by drawing letters using lined paper and calligraphy markers that I provide and which they can keep. The objective of these workshops is to complete the miniscule alphabet in the time allotted,
so that participants leave with a familiarity of the hand.

I really enjoy conducting the workshops, because I get an opportunity
to share my love of letters, and participants really respond. As we work through the letter families, I see people looking at letters in a whole
new way....and it’s great to see the AHA! moment! In addition, several participants from workshops have contacted me afterward to thank me,
to ask questions, or to ask about other opportunities to learn calligraphy.
This is very rewarding.

OTHER LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS

Invited Lectures and Workshops related to Design, Design Thinking Strategies or Letterform Identification and Literarcy are also included
in this listing, and are identified accordingly.

Twelve years ago, a child asked me to explain how it is possible that
a two-story g and a one-story g could represent the same letter and the same sound. This one simple (and profound) question led me to work with reading teachers and other experts who work with children to find ways to help children more easily learn to identify letters in order to improve reading comprehension. I have presented on this topic at several conferences, written papers, and also held lectures and workshops for K-12 teachers to increase awareness of this issue
with the objective of helping children to learn to read.

Design thinking strategies and processes are the tools that we use
to address problems and to reach the best possible solutions.
I am intrigued by this process and share various techniques, strategies and models with my students. IDEO and other organizations and individuals have brought the term “design thinking” into commerce, education and our lives.

The STEM initiative in schools and the discussion of adding A (art)
to the acronym to become STEAM, is an objective in many educational programs. I have conducted several lectures and workshops for adults and for children to introduce design thinking fundamentals that can be of assistance in solving problems in daily life. It is SO fun to work with children and to see how they incorporate design thinking as they work
to create new products that they envision....so fun!
